Ok I have an 89 and a 90 587 sp seadoos. Both have the yellow motor. what should the compression be? I think it should be around 150 psi? I am pretty sure both need top ends rebuilt as the 89 has 95 psi in one hole and 60 psi in the other. The 90 has 30 psi in both jugs. My question is this, can I take off the jugs without removing the intake and the rotoray valve? I won''t have a problem taking the intake off, it is the putting it back together and getting the right psition on this rotory valve. I have a manual and it still seems a little difficult even with the shop manual. It has some paper measuring circle or something of that nature. Any help would be great. I guess I should look up my own compression since I have the manual....posting before thinking again.

No you are correct a fresh motor should have around 150psi per cylinder. My 97 Challenger is at 110 and 112. Also you shouldn't have more than say a 5-7psi difference per cylinder or you could damage the rest of the motor by it being unbalanced.

yea, I dug out the shop manual. It says 148 psi per cylinder. I got the two seadoos and the double trailer for 250. The guy told me they had good compression but no spark. He is a friend of a friend and a auto mechanic so I took his word for it. I checked them out today. One has spark and bad compression the other has bad copression and no spark. The one with no spark has an after market msd ignition. I guess it went bad. My plan is to get it back to a stock ignition and rebuild the top end. So it looks like I have at the very least two top ends to rebuild. Off to ebay for parts.

Sitting....?

If these skis were sitting for any period of time, you may have lost the lubricating seal of the cylinder walls.

Give a small squirt of your weed eater gas in each plug hole, spin the motor over a couple times, then try again. The dry test without your rings sealing will give this kind of result.

Ebay, be careful. I use ebay too but I know people, including me, who have not gotten exactly what they bargained for.

wd 40

I sprayed some wd40 into the spark plug holes. Is that two thin you think? They were pretty dry down there they have been sitting for at least two years. I went on ebay last night and found a local seadoo shop that will rebuild the whole engine from the crank up for $599.00 with a 1 year warranty. I started pricing top end kits and the cheapest top end kit I can find were wiesco top end kit with the pistons, rings, wrist pins, needle bearings, and circlips for $268.00. But then my boring guy wants $40.00 per hole. For a total of $348.00 + gaskets and Orings. Which isn't too bad. So that would cover the top end. Now...... that is hoping all is well with the lower end. I am thinking that pulling the engines and bringing them to get rebuilt is probably my best bet. I found the full bore company on Ebay as well and they sound decent but $1000.00 per engine is way too rich for my blood for these two older than dirt skis. I just want something that will run dependably and my family can have fun on. I still don't even know what condition the pumps are in. Oh and I contacted the local shop and asked if he would cut me a deal since I have two engines and I would give him winter work he said he would knock a few hundred off so I think I found what I'm going to do unless someone here talks me into something better.

I own a 89 sp and can tell you the problems I had with mine. Hard to start and oil everywhere. Clean the fuel tank fuel, fuel petcock valves and fuel pump really good to get the crap out, If sat for a long time. The next thing would be to make sure you dont have the grey oil and fuel lines? If so replace with new clear lines. If your using the old oil and fuel lines cut the end off a bit and make sure that all hose clamps are tight. There known to leak and make a mess also hard to start if the gas presure is not there. Just my 2 cents worth.
