08 230 Challenger 430hp ~ long beep on startup

Hi all. Long time reader of the forums. Thanks for providing such great advice.

On startup the boat will emit a high-pitched beep that lasts for 5 seconds or so. It happens after I start the second engine, never after the first. It doesn't matter if I start the port engine first or the starboard.

It doesn't seem to cause me any problems. It's been doing it since I got the boat last year and it doesn't happen every time, but I can't figure out a reason or a pattern for it. It doesn't match any of the trouble codes. I've researched this forum and read through my manual cover to cover. Might it be a warning about not leaving the blower on long enough? I think I've disproved that hypothesis as well. ;-)

I had been thinking over the past year that it was the low depth warning noise from my depth finder (pre-installed), but I dug out the manual today and confirmed that all alarms have been turned off on the device.

Any ideas? I am not scheduled to see the dealer until the fall, and would rather avoid it unless you guys feel the beep is some kind of warning. It's painfully loud, and especially irritating when we have guests on board.

Thanks in advance.

I've got a 2008 230 Challenger and have noticed the same high - pitched beep. I thought it was just perhaps a normal sequencing thing. FYI, I've got a depth gauge not reading correctly anymore. LCD is lit up and seems to be doing something as I push buttons but it doesn't seem to read the depth. My 1 yr warranty runs out Sept 11, 2009 and guess I need to haul it out of the marina and into the shop for them to take a look at it. Pain in the arss though. Although it needs to have it's service done after 1 year anyway. Not heading down to the Gulf until 1st week of August.

Quick follow up :

Dealer says to check oil levels and coolant levels. I think it was just a brush off. I'll recheck levels this weekend but does anyone here have any better ideas for me?

My 180 gives 1 ear shattering beep after startup if my lanyard isn't on straight.

Also if its not charging it will sound 1 long beep too but that's while its running.

That's also a 180 so that may not help you

It is the depth guage...disconnect it from the power, and you will see the beep goes away.

yea i get the same sound. But I can be in 40foot of water and it does it. I turn the power switch to off and back on and start it up and no sound?????

Hey Karl ...

I removed the dash and cut the power to the depth finder. It still beeps, EXACTLY as the videos from "Dooit" shows. Seems it might be common to our model year. Doesn't happen every time, but I'd say at least 80% of the time.

Hey guys ..

Been out on the boat for a few days straight and I may have found a pattern. It seems when I turn off the engines with the toggle switches, the next time I start it, it will beep. If I turn off the engines by pulling the lanyard, no beep on the next start.

That seems to work for me anyways.

I always pull the lanyard to stop my engines...I don't recall it happening before I installed my sounder unit. I'll keep a mind to it next time out.
