Hi guys,

Here's the deal - when the boat is cold, and only at idle, the engine will start making a very strange and bad sounding noise. Watch the video to see what I'm talking about:

In the video, the boat starts out normally...then listen to the bad noise begin at 12 seconds until I shut it off. Then I re-start it and it sounds normal for a few seconds...until 33 seconds in the video where the bad sound happens for another 5 seconds or so.

Ignore the 12v low on initial start-up - that's not the problem (as it's been doing this for a long time, even with fresh battery). I have received no check-engine or warnings. When revved up even the slightest bit the noise goes away and it doesn't do it when it's warm. The engine performs and behaves normally otherwise. The RPM's aren't going down below normal idle (around 1800rpm) according to the dash, but it sounds as though it's bogging down...

Do any mechanics or knowledgable SeaDoo guys have any idea on what can be the cause of this?

Do you get any bad vibration when it is doing that? I had something stuck in my pump and it sounded just like that but had a bad vibration too. Check your engine mounts as well. Look for anything that is loose while at idle.

Sounds like you have something rattling around in your pump. When you try to accelerate does it shake and cavitate without planing out? Does it rev normally?

I guess you have some debris in your pump. It could be that it’s behind the impeller just there where you have the stators. Once I had a plastic cap from a drink bottle hanging between the stators and I had an equal symptom.

Thanks for the replies. I will investigate the pump...what's strange is it only does it when cold and at idle. Never when warm...when it's warm if there was something in the pump wouldn't it be making the same sound? I wonder if it's an idle speed issue (the engine bogging down) or computer issue.

The tach is usually pretty good, I still think its something with the pump. I had a plastic bag that gave me trouble on my jet ski till I saw it, it drove me nuts. What does it do out of the water on the trailer or lift? That would tell a lot.

It sounds completely normal when on a trailer out of the water. However, I don't run it for very long out of the water, 10 seconds max.

Did you ever get this problem sorted?
I am having the same type sound.
What was the fix?

Yes I got the problem fixed - it hasn't made the sound in over a month. I did a few WOT acceleration runs from a stand-still and it hasn't done it since. I believe it was something lodged in the pump and it took a few runs at high rpm to dislodge. Good luck!
