Hey guys,

Just got onto this forum, I just bought 2 - 2005 RXT Sea Doos, and was looking for a little assistance on some questions.

Both skis have around 50hrs on them. And was owned by some older folks, I have not had any problems out of the skis except for some wood getting caught in the impeller, I have put about 5hrs on them, I was going to upgrade the s/c washers to the Riva steel style before the ceramic washers go out on me and then $$$$$.

Now here starts my first question: How hard is it to change out these washers myself, I really dont want to pay someone to do them if you can just DIY. I am a mechanic, obviously not a marine mechanic, so I am very mechanically inclined and know the necessity of keeping parts clean from debris, visually inspecting all components for wear, and etc.

Next question: On my 05's am I going to need to just replace the washers(I know if other parts look worn I will have to replace them as well) or should I do the supercharger shaft/ clutch kit?

Next question: Is there a break-in time after replacing the washers? Like am I going to have to keep from WOT on the skis for a 5-10 hrs or are they good to go after the swap?

Next question: Where can I buy a shop manual for this ski? I know that if I become a premium member on this site I have access to all the manuals, but I was really looking for a book so I could have access to it out in the garage while I worked on the skis.

Also I was going to go through and change to oil, and apparently I need to put in the Sea Doo semi-syn 10W-40 oil cause they dont make the non synthetic any longer. Also I was gonna change out the spark plugs on each ski. Wanting to do all this to ensure that the skis are ready to go and I have covered all the basis on the basic stuff that could go wrong with purchasing a pre-owned ski. If you have any further input on any other things I should check or replace I would appreciate it.

I know A LOT of these questions have probably been asked and I also researched a little bit before I posted this thread but I just had some specific questions and didnt want to post in like 4 different threads to try and get some answers, so dont forum kill me for being a noob and starting up this thread. If you guys have any further information that would help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for all your help.

Hey Mat,
Quite a few questions so I'll do my best to answer them all.

First, swapping the washers isn't too bad. Here is a link to the instructions:

http://www.rivamotorsports.com/instructions/rs1751_hdw_948.pdf

There are two ways you can upgrade them...

1) upgrade ONLY the washers (cheaper)
2) upgrade and rebuild with '08 spec components (better but more expensive)

The links above are to PWCMuscle.com where you'll find the lowest prices on the rebuild kits. There are a bunch of additional performance parts on there for the RXT that you can browse and check out as well.

It's my opinion that for peace of mind you should do the full rebuild to '08 spec. Can you keep going with out a rebuild? Yes, technically your seadoo will keep running with dead superchargers as well :)

The new washers don't require a break in time. They are good to go once properly installed.

Regarding shop manuals, you can always print out sections (or the entire manual) for the ones we have in premium section. One of the better deals is doing this yourself as the printed ones are around $100 from any dealer. If you'd really like a hard copy, shoot me a PM and I"ll see the best price I can find for you.

I hope this helps! You have a great pair of PWCs there and I'm sure they'll provide you with a ton of fun and excitement. Just take care of them and they'll do well for you!

Thanks Joe this helps out a lot. Also that link for the installation of the washers is great, this will make swapping out the washers a whole hell of a lot easier. Not sure if I will do the full rebuild or not, just because since I got two skis that means $625 instead of just the washers being only $210, but I understand what your saying about the full rebuild. I just really want to get those damn ceramic washers out before I have to rebuild the whole engine. And thanks for the links, now I want to spend even more money on the dang skis, lol, well atleast the one I ride all the time! Yeah $100 on the actual printed shop manual is quite high, might just opt to become a premium member when I need further assistance. Oh another quick question for ya, do ya need to buy the shaft tool for the s/c or could you use a regular wrench? I dont want to spend the extra $50 if I can just use one of the wrenches I already have. Thanks again

Check out a store called 4 tec perfomance. They have all the rebuild kits as well as lots of other stuff for you ski. The have some links there for instructions on how to remove the supercharger, also the guy that runs the place rebuilds chargers. All you have to do is send it to him. 75 bucks for a full rebuild 15 for washer replacement. Just buy there rebuild kit and he will take care of it and send it back to you. I did this with my RXT and have had no problems, ended up costing me about 400 bucks rather than 700 for the dealer to do it.
I never did the rebuild but I was told that you have to have the special tools to do it.

Hope this helps, good luck

Yes, you pretty much need the special wrench tool that is sold. It's a very thin wrench made to fit into a tight space. If you are mechanically inclined at all, it shouldn't be too big of a deal to do the swap.

Replacing the washers is a great start to a reliable season. I wouldn't wait on those, especially if the previous owner happened to use synthetic oil. The full rebuild, well your milage may very. Some owners have had to do theirs after 10 hours unfortunately. Others haven't had a problem.

If you are going to order, PM me and I'll send you a discount code to save you an extra 5% off for PWCMuscle.

BTW, that RXT stage 1 kit rips :)

Didn't I reAd last night that a one year membership is only like 50.00 per year??? With members and mods that can help with my two 05" RXPs that's a no brainer!!!!

Thanks guys, yeah I might as well go ahead and get the wrench then. From what I read these s/c need attention throughout the seasons to ensure good realiablity. I am just planning on doing the washer swap on my own. By the looks of the instructions it doesnt seem like a bad job at all. And yeah the skis are sitting in the garage until I get back home from work in 3 weeks to replace the washers. Any thoughts on a few performance parts that will just overall help the ski run better, and dont tell me the stage 3 kit cant afford that much :(, but wish I could! Thought about getting the power filter kit and intake grate. Yeah slugo you cant beat that price for the knowledge and materials that are available on here. And JoeZ pm is sent for the discount, thanks again! Also does anyone know what the p/n for the plugs and oil filter are? Going to try and order the oil, filter, and plugs for these 2 skis so I can get them all rdy for being home 4 weeks straight on the lake!

The oil filter is listed on PWC muscle as well...just search "oil filter". I've PMed you the coupon code to use.

For performance parts, you can really install the stage 1 parts in any order. The power filter kit and intake grate as you mentioned would be great additions.

I'm in a similar position as Mat, with two 2005 RXT's with "dead" superchargers.

After a couple hours of reading through the forums, I've only got one question that I haven't found the answer to -

Washer upgrade Vs rebuild kit?

I understand it's "better" to do the complete rebuild kit, but why is that? Is it related to operating hours? Improved component design? If so, what was changed?

Thanks!

There are oil passages in some of the washers that help lubricate the entire system. When they start to wear, the passages get more and more shallow, until they do not exist anymore.

BRP suggests a rebuild every 100 hours due to this wear. With the rebuild kit, you get '08 spec components and the new steel washers that will not break down. You still will want to rebuild again at your next 100 hours mark.

Hope this clears things up :)
