02 RXDI runs great for a few minutes then dies

My brother in law has a 02 RXDI. It will start fine and run great for a few minutes then go completely dead. It dies and the dash goes dead. He brought it to the dealer in Billings Montana. They charged him $1700.00 to do a top end rebuild. He finely got it back after 2 months. First time out it ran for a couple of minutes and then died just like before. If the engine isn't getting any oil will the computer shut it down? it doesn't spit and sputter. It just goes completely dead. Dealer is completely baffled on this one. Also doesn't $1700.00 seem really steep for a top end rebuild.
Any ideas what this could be?

It does seem steep. Have can you hear the overheating buzzer? Also, check out the water temperature sensor. I think you can unplug it,and it will still start. It could also be your rev limiter. It sounds definatley like an electrical problem.
