02 gt1 problems

I just bought this 02 gt1 and first off it took about 5 mins to warm up, that might be normal I dont know. The big problem is it ran good after the warm up for about 15 mins and then it would lose power, and if you feather the gas it would stay running and at full throttle it would barley move, then a few mins later it would run good for about 30 seconds, and do the same thing over and over. Any help point to me in the right direction would be great. Thanks
 
Welcome to the seadoo forum dave00.What did you do before your first voyage? How did it run on it's test run before you bought it? Have the carbs been cleaned lately? Does it have fresh fuel, correct and properly gaped spark plugs? Is the battery fairly new and holding a charge? Is the compression ok? Ideally it should be at 150psi.

HI, thanks. The test drive was short and it seem ok, but it took a long time to get where you could give it gas with out it cutting off, and then I ran it for about ten mins and it did ok. I am not sure if the carbs have been cleaned, but we did put some fresh fuel in it, and new plugs but we did not gap them, is this and important step? The battery is new. I am not sure how to check compression I can see if someone can check it for me. I am really lost on this one because I have a 05 gp800r also and it has had no problems at all.
 
You'll need a compression tester. Go to Auto Zone. I think they sell for like $25.00. The compression gage, will screw in the cylinder head in place of the spark plugs. To test compression, remove both spark plugs. Place spark plug caps on the plug cap studs near the cylinder head to ground the empty caps. This completes the circuit of the ignition electrical system and prevents any electrical problems from the caps being un grounded. Using the correct adapter for the threaded end of the tester,( same length of the spark plug threads length)screw in the tester in one plug hole. Hold the throttle wide open. Push the start button. Watch the compression guage, when it peaks out at the most compression, let go the start button. Read the psi number. I would do it 3 times to be sure it is accurate. Check both cylinders the same way. The ideal compression is 150 psi per cylinder. If it is less, it's not a problem as long as they are close to being the same. If the psi is less than 90 it might need be time for a tear down and a rebuild. If the psi in 1 cylinder is say 140 psi and the other is 80 psi you need to tear down and repair. This difference is a lot then there is a problem.

The gap on the spark plugs should be .024". The proper gap is important for a correct heat range.

Thanks, I will check the compression tomarrow, and gap the plugs. Is it it possible the with the plugs not being gaped right it cause that?
 
With the plugs not gapped correctly it could be a cause of the problem say if the gap was way off...or the wrong plugs were installed. It uses NGK B8RES I believe, if memory serves me right...

kustomkarl is right about the compression. In my head atleast it doesn't seem like a spark problem, but yes gap is very important. To me atleast is sounds like fuel. I would get the carbs gone through and put a new fuel filter on it. Having the fuel tank emptied and cleaned would not be a bad idea either.
 
I checked the compression it was around 79 on one and 85 on the other. I am assuming this is low compression, could this cause the problem or does it just need the top end rebuilt.
