02 Explorer spinning

I purchased a 02 Explorer, with 3 aboard I have to back off the throttle while getting on plane as she is spinning. The wear ring clearance is fine, impeller looks good and with one aboard she jumps right up. Is this the nature of the boat? How can I check the seal for air leakage, will tipping it up on the trailer and letting some water cover the seal work (not much pressure at play). I am also thinking about a Swirl impeller and would appreciate some input on the best pitch for acceleration.

It still sounds like cavitation, the next place to check is the carbon seal. Try putting a couple of cable ties around the rubber bellows that covers it. They will put a little extra pressure on the carbon seal. Some guys just put them on a call it fixed, I look at it as a diagnostic tool only.

Something is wrong, my 94 Explorer (smaller engine) gets on plane with 4 people on board, I am 230lbs by myself!

Your right, I rebuilt the jet pump and went with a 15/20 swirl impeller. What a difference, now I can tow a 180lbs teenager on a tube with 2 200lbs adults and 2 150lbs teenager on board.
