Hi all. New to the board. Long time car mechanic. Bought an 01 utopia last year with a bad engine in it. Found a challenger with a 240 merc in it. Converted it to fit the 210 carb that was in it. Ran great all last year tiill last time out. Lost some power and couldn't get more than 4500 rpm out of it. Been trying to diagnose and got me stumped a little. Tried different flywheel off other engine and worked great for a bit. Had 6000 rpm and very responsive. As it warmed up it lost rpm and not as responsive. Thinking maybe a fuel problem with it. Carb issue or the like. Checked the ignition trigger. New plugs and rebuilt fuel pump. Any ideas would be appreciated Thx all

Did you check the stator?

Stator Assembly
The stator assembly has a BLACK ground wire which grounds the stator to the engine.
IMPORTANT: Stator must be grounded to engine.
STATOR TEST
1. To test, disconnect BLUE/WHITE and RED/WHITE stator leads from outer switch box
and BLUE and RED stator leads from inner switch box.
2. Use an ohmmeter and perform the following tests:
STATOR
Between BLUE and RED Stator Leads = 3500-4200 ohms
Between BLUE/WHITE and RED/WHITE Stator Leads = 3500-4200 ohms
Between RED Stator Lead and BLACK Stator Lead = 90-140 ohms
Between RED/WHITE Stator Lead and BLACK Stator Lead = 90-140 ohms
3. If meter readings are other than specified, replace stator assembly.

You mentioned having checked the ignition trigger, but just in case, here are the test specifications.

TRIGGER ASSEMBLY TEST
1. Disconnect all trigger leads from switch boxes.
2. Use an ohmmeter and perform the following checks:

Between BROWN Trigger Lead (without YELLOW Sleeve) and WHITE Trigger Lead (with YELLOW Sleeve) = 1100-1400 ohms
Between WHITE Trigger Lead (without YELLOW Sleeve) and VIOLET Trigger Lead (with YELLOW Sleeve) = 1100-1400 ohms
Between VIOLET Trigger Lead (without YELLOW Sleeve) and BROWN Trigger Lead (with YELLOW Sleeve) = 1100-1400 ohms
3. If meter readings are not as specified, replace trigger assembly.

Thanks for the reply Murph. I did check the trigger and all is good. Will check the stator as soon as I get a chance and let ya know.

Yopu should check them cold and with the engine warmed up. They could be failing/intermittent when hot.

Thanks. I did take stator out and check. Turns out it’s open on one side. Now just gotta find one. Thx for the specs and help

Glad I could help...hope you get it repaired soon and get out and enjoy that Utopia...they're great boats...

Hi all. Just an update. Ordered a new stator and installed it, and the boat works fantastic. Thanks all for your help
