I have an 01 Sporster LE with the 951 engine. Rebuilt the carbs and put new reed petals in last year. Engine was rebuilt 4 years ago. Compression is 135 psi in both cylinders. Motor runs great and has lots of power all the way up to the 6000rpm range but when I get above 6000 it can't quite make it to 7000 anymore. The RPM is very up and down in that range, even the back pressure from steering is enough to lower the RPM down to almost 6000 and it never used to do that before this year. Checked everything I can think of; the rave valves move up and down freely, changed the check valve on the rave system, took the jet off and the impeller turns freely, drive shaft isn't binding and is well greased in the pto. Any suggestions?

Sounds fuel delivery related,
Are your throttle plates fully open?
Are the choke plates fully open?
Since it's not a DI,,,try running the fuel line directly into the carb,,,this could help you eliminate the fuel delivery components,,,pet cock diaphram, pickup, etc,

I figured it out. It was the switch on the thottle cable that tells the CPU to advance the spark at high rpms, it wasn't sending the signal anymore. So I lost power in the 6000rpm range cause the combustion was happening too late.

Bkwashby, where is this switch located?

Wow,,,,I have never heard of such a switch...timing advance links are usually on outboards...can you take a pic?

Well I won't be at my boat till the weekend but this is what the cable looks like with the switch.
