Hi
I have an 01 challenger 1800 with the mercury 210 in it, it was starting funny like it would intermitantly just click and not turn over, so i would just cycle key and and then it would fire. It always fired but I decided I want to just change out the starter solenoid for maintenance.

I matched it up at west marine with a solenoid they had but i dont believe its the correct piece. The solenoid on boat has the two smaller posts with signal and ground and then the 2 larger posts for the starter circuit and its part# is 89-817109a1. The solenoid i picked up from west marine part# 89-817109a2 but the 2 smaller posts are signal and ign, which if i ran the ground to the ign terminal it would be a problem.

When i researched 89-817109a1 the solenoid would come up and advertise both part numbers as if they are the same part. So now im not sure if my existing one is even the correct solenoid, very confusing. Does anyone know more detail on this topic

Thanks

A few things....

1) please clean up your post. (thoughts, and punctuation) It's very hard to read though.

2) Post pics of the new solenoid.

Sorry about that, i typed it on my phone lol. Didnt notice how bad that post looked

I have to think it is still a ground terminal. The way it is designed it is not grounded when bolted in place based on the rubber grommet. If I am correct, then the "i" terminal must be a ground assuming the other small terminal is in fact a signal post.

That would make the most sense, maybe they put the s and i markings on the casing of the new solenoid just so the body is universal..

I will test it tonight, just wanted to see more experienced thoughts with this boat since im new to boating and the seadoo. I just dont want to jump the gun and make sure i have the proper parts installed.

I just bought boat last summer and on its maiden voyage the oil pump gear failed and took motor out. I basically replaced every part minus the block and run premix now, had it out once since the rebuild and now im reupholstering it and fixing all the odds and ends..

Just keeping my fingers crossed, its like walking on eggshells after that experience lol

Test it externally. Run a ground to the "i " wire assuming the "S" is the signal and touch the S with a hot wire. It will snap closed if so.

Ive never seen a piston melt this bad and ive melted some pistons drag racing

Yep... coastie has it right. the "I" is ignition. It's a bypass on some systems. But, for giggles... grab a meter and make sure that you don't have continuity between one of the small terminals and the mount.

As far as the piston... normal when you either run out of oil... have an air leak... or loose a ring. Basically the heat gets past the ring, and you melt the skirt. Then, the top ring breaks out... and all hell breaks lose.

Bore/hone that one jug... put in an over sized piston, and re-ring the other 5 pistons stock size, and call it a day.

Ok i tested the solenoid and it was right, put it in and boat ran great on the lake upstate but theres still a rough cold start, might be the enrichment valve..

However after running all day i check the hull when getting back and noticed water started leaking in from between the motor and adapter platen thought it was the gasket but when i got it back home I got a better look.. It seems though the casting blew out, not sure how but what do you guys recommend to fix it. Im thinking some sort of epoxy like jbweld

Also this brass nipple towards the back of the adapter plate, i believe i read it was a vent of some sort but i cant seem to remember.. i noticed a little water bubbled out of it when a little water filled into the hull..
I have both full service manuals but cant find a description on it

Thanks

ouch that stinks... salt water corrosion maybe ... think jb weld may be a temp fix but that's my opinion... leave that to the experts to decide.. the little brass valve is suppose to be connected to a hose that lays in the bottom of the engine compartment with a screen on the end that sucks water out when the jet pump is moving like a bilge pump
