717 Top End Rebuild? Need Advice

Ah I understand now. Unfortunately it looks like the old gasket is too far gone to see the holes completely. I think I can see the edges of a couple holes, but not all of them. The kit came with a 0.5mm, so I will run with that.

717 Top End Rebuild? Need Advice

Thanks, that’s a helpful visual. I agree I’ll take some measurements when I get ahold of some tools

717 Top End Rebuild? Need Advice

The base gasket is in pieces so I can’t reuse it, but I bought a gasket kit from OSD, so I’ll be replacing all the gaskets anyway after cleaning up all the parts that came off. I have feeler gauges at work so I’ll be able to follow up on the rings in a few days. Looked like there were some...

717 Top End Rebuild? Need Advice

So I think I found the culprit, I had 2 very loose jug screws right next to each other, and all the gaskets are toast. I have the cylinders off and I don’t feel any scratches. Everything seems very smooth. There is just some side to side free play with the rings and the piston heads. Not sure...

717 Top End Rebuild? Need Advice

So i opened up my engine just now, and I see the pistons looking like this. I know I ran lean the last time I rode it, but this looks much worse than I was anticipating. Wondering what your thoughts are, if the conditions of these pistons are okay, and that they are so different. Thanks

717 Top End Rebuild? Need Advice

Hello, I have a 1997 GSI with the 717 engine, single carb. I have been having issues with it all summer after a carb and fuel system rebuild. I still can't get it to run correctly (starts immediately but takes a long time to accelerate, bogs, doesn't maintain top speed). After short rides, I've...

    1997 GSI bogging issue

Amazon.com I just need it to help diagnose my bogging issues and get me thru the summer. I'll be replacing it with much higher quality hose later.

    1997 GSI bogging issue

I haven't been able to trial the water separator/fuel selector bypass yet, but I went ahead and replaced all of the fuel lines with a clear, reinforced fuel line. Seems like it will hold up well, hopefully better than the clear Tygon line that some people use. I also put some gasket sealant...

    1997 GSI bogging issue

If I try this fuel filter/selector bypass, should I use a new fuel line since mine is apparently questionable? Is there a big risk of damaging the carb when running w/o the filter ?

    1997 GSI bogging issue

I assume we’re both talking about Pro 1 fuel line (see pic). Looks like the continental is out of stock. I’ve heard really good things about Gates Barricade fuel line as well, will probably spend the extra $ to go with that next time. Unsure if it’s causing the bog issue, but it probably doesn’t...

    1997 GSI bogging issue

That’s a great idea, I will definitely try bypassing those next and see what happens. And yes the fuel lines are 1/4” ID, top rated ones on Amazon, probably middle of the road in terms of quality. However, have you heard of fuel lines causing gas to turn orange? When I open up my carb, the fuel...

    1997 GSI bogging issue

I have tried that actually. Sometimes that trick works, but after I go make a screw adjustment, seems like something else gets worse. Kinda going in circles. Is it possible to over tighten the carb to the engine intake and damage the gasket? I didn’t think I tightened too much, but maybe it’s...

    1997 GSI bogging issue

Thanks for the reply. This is the first time I’ve heard of a possible engine related issue instead of a carb/fuel supply issue. So I’m curious, if it was running great thru last summer, but having issues on day one this spring, can the rotary valve timing be affected without touching the engine...

    1997 GSI bogging issue

Hello, I’ve been trying to figure out this issue for a while and finally decided to join the forum because I’m about to give up. I apologize for the long post in advance but I want to provide as much info as I can to avoid guesswork. I have a 1997 GSI and 1997 GTI. They both have the same 717...
