Yes I got the problem fixed - it hasn't made the sound in over a month. I did a few WOT acceleration runs from a stand-still and it hasn't done it since. I believe it was something lodged in the pump and it took a few runs at high rpm to dislodge. Good luck!

Solved the issue of stiff shifting today - the bolts and sleeves holding the reverse gate in place were corroding, dirty, and in need of grease (thank you Merc596 for this suggestion). Ok thanks for the tips - I'll inspect it. How difficult is replacing the cable? I'm moderately handy...the parts diagram has me a little worried though, it looks like a ton of parts. Also, if it is just the sleeves/bolts needing lubricant at the gate, what kind of lube do you use...no jokes ;)

It sounds completely normal when on a trailer out of the water. However, I don't run it for very long out of the water, 10 seconds max.

When you say "disconnect it from both ends" are you referring to the cable? Disconnect from the shifter and by the gate?

The tach says they stay right at the normal ~1800. The tach could be reading incorrectly though...

Thanks for the replies. I will investigate the pump...what's strange is it only does it when cold and at idle. Never when warm...when it's warm if there was something in the pump wouldn't it be making the same sound? I wonder if it's an idle speed issue (the engine bogging down) or computer issue.
