How to get these screws out?

A favorite of mine for carb screws. I keep one of these on top of my workbench as my go to screwdriver. Both are worth the price.

No spindle washer on my trailer?

4 Timkens and 2 National seals cost me $60 US. I also replaced the bearing buddies since they were out. Also I replaced the 1997 tires first. The ski has been to the other side of the state and back a few times, 280 miles each way . Sure it was twice the price of the no name cheaper kits but I...

No spindle washer on my trailer?

Timken SET 4 is for the 1.06". Timken SET 14 is for the 1.00". Amazon has them for under $10. I don't buy cheaper no name bearings. If I change one, I change them all. My trailer spindle didn't have enough indexing holes to get the proper end play, .001” to 0.005”. It was either too tight or...

    717 carbs

My single carb 97 GTI had an off idle bog. I put on the new later model replacement carb with different jets etc. Without opening it up or touching the screws, the bog is gone and it runs flawlessly.

97 gti stumbles off idle, feather the throttle runs great

I have a 97 GTI and it had the same exact issue. I never got the issue fixed before the top airbox lug broke due to the carb to head support not fitting well. To me it looks like SeaDoo knew there was a problem and they worked on in subsequent years. In 98 they went with a bigger pilot, more low...

    2000 717 GTI Parasitic Draw

artr, using math? It is a powerful tool. I was chasing down a parasitic draw in the son-in-law's 2006 Acura RL the last two days. It drained the battery in a couple weeks. First day of work I made no progress except to find one burned fuse. Never got the amp reading to change. Started the next...

    2000 717 GTI Parasitic Draw

Google "digital switch low voltage when off" and read the AI generated answer. Digital switches doesn't go all the way to zero or all the way up to supply voltage. They just get close enough to both to cause things to operate correctly. I wrote functional tests for commercial airplanes. When we...

    Oil injection bleed screw

Read about annealing copper washers. I have reused many as is and annealed and both worked. I now anneal them all just for peace of mind.

    Help with 717 single carb

Same 97 GTI here that we bought for $1. It had never been touched and wasn't running due to clogged filter inside carb. Rebuilt the carb and ran it for part of a year. Read the carb rebuild thread many times and I think I followed all the instructions. It had a similar lean bog off idle. No...

    97 GTS runs then dies

Common advice from experts and manufactures is never poke anything though jets or small carburetor passages. There are those cavemen out there so I understand their perspective so never let it be said I suggested it. Aluminum oxide is what I think the white stuff was. It is actually harder and...

    97 GTS runs then dies

Get a piece of wire from a wire brush and see if you can poke it down those holes. There are also micro or jewelers drill bit sets that are cheap and you can sacrifice some to find one that will fit in the holes. Use a piece of old inner tube with a hole punched in it to form a gasket around the...

1999 GTX RFI oil leak after rebuild

I got fancy for my first pressure test. Plywood traced from the gaskets and some old motorcycle inner tube to seal. My bycycle pump has a gauge so I used that on the pulse line. My old engine wouldn't hold any pressure for more than 15 seconds however it wasn't a bad oil leaker. I have since...

1999 GTX RFI oil leak after rebuild

Just visually looking at a seal will tell you almost nothing. I would do a pressure test. Air is a smaller molecule than oil. If you have an air leak it doesn't mean a big oil leak. But if you have a big oil leak from a seal, then you will also have a huge air leak.

BN CARB FUEL PUMP EXPERIMENT - Point of Interest Only

Google "viscosity relation to piping losses" and read the AI answer. Air isn't very viscous. I do the same sorts of garage experiments and I am very impressed with yours. It's been 47 years since I graduated from college and all those classes are a distant memory. Now all I know are the basics...

Is this going to be a problem?

Resleeved and .25 over? That's an oxymoron. I got a 1997 720 that had never been apart and had sat for 7 years after it wouldn't start. I got it running and we ran the crap out of it for a summer. First picture is the cylinder wall condition after that year. You can see the factory chamfers on...

    98 GSXL Cracked Pump

Less than $250 for a usable pump from Westside and a new OEM wear ring to me is a lot better than some glue and hope you don't sink.

Odd throttle performance on "new to us" 2001 GTS, suggestions?

Advice you are getting here is pretty much what the maintenance manual says in the troubleshooting section with some added solid advice not in the manual. Spark or fuel is the issue. Spark timing is direct off the crank, not the rotary valve. I highly doubt you have a timing issue. Seems like a...

    carburetor spring weight

I wasn't trying to beat a dead horse. Wrote my second post, got distracted with something else, and didn't hit post reply until hours later. In the meantime, mikidymac had written a very insightful explanation.

    carburetor spring weight

Maybe I should explain it with math. Spring rate is units of force per unit of deflection expressed as ponds per inch or newtons per millimeter or kilograms per millimeter. The load at any deflection is the free length minus the length when deflected times the spring rate. I worked in the...

    carburetor spring weight

Think about diving boards. Long board will sink a several feet from the base when you stand on the end. It feels soft under foot. So you adjust the board up with an initial arch so you only sink a foot from the base. This is adjusting the preload. However it will still stay soft under foot. This...
